Best directory website builder: choose by four checks
The best builder depends on four things, so settle them before you compare features.
- Revenue model: paid listings, member dues, classifieds or leads sold to listed businesses.
- Cost shape: caps on members or listings, a license fee, add-ons, a percentage on transactions, or hosting you supply.
- Control: a hosted tier, a license with PHP code, or WordPress that you run yourself.
- Operator: who will do setup, support and updates after launch.
The shortlist: five options and how each counts cost
Each line summarizes the vendor's own pages, read on October 23, 2026. Amounts stay on the live pages.
- Brilliant Directories: hosted monthly tiers capped by members, emails and listings, with a built-in paywall, lead selling and ads. Read the review and pricing guide.
- eDirectory: two cloud options and a one-time source license, each with unlimited listings and members. Only the source license includes the PHP code and self-hosting. See the head-to-head comparison.
- Directify: a free plan for one directory with ten listings, then paid tiers by listing and directory count. It describes an AI builder and 17 templates. Payments go to your own Stripe, Lemon Squeezy or Creem account with no platform fee.
- Join It: membership software for clubs, associations and nonprofits, with a member directory from its middle tier up. A percentage service fee on online transactions falls on higher tiers, and processor fees are separate.
- GeoDirectory: a free WordPress plugin with paid add-ons on yearly licenses. Paid listings use its Pricing Manager add-on, and payments run through GetPaid or WooCommerce.
Criteria: how to compare them on your own plan
Use the same five questions for every builder, and write each answer down.
- How many listings and paying members will you have in month one, six and twelve?
- Which limit does that hit first: members, listings, emails, storage or a transaction percentage?
- Which payment processor will you use, and what does the builder add on top of its fees?
- Does the site show the vendor's name, or can you remove it, and on which tier?
- Can you export your members and listings if you leave?
Trade-offs and fit by directory type
The same builder can be right for one model and wrong for another.
- Local business directory with paid listings: Brilliant Directories, eDirectory and Directify all describe paid listing plans. GeoDirectory adds them through its Pricing Manager add-on.
- Association member directory: Join It is built around dues, renewals and a member portal. Brilliant Directories and eDirectory list membership features too, with more public-directory tooling.
- Classifieds or lead-generation site: eDirectory lists classifieds and a lead form, and Brilliant Directories sells leads to members by the lead or in credit packs.
- Small niche test: Directify offers a free plan for one directory with ten listings, and the others offer trials or demos. Compare their limits on each pricing page.
When to switch builders or avoid a hosted one
Moving a live directory is slow, so check the exit before you start. The Brilliant Directories plans page lists member import and export, and eDirectory lists import and export for listings and events. GeoDirectory keeps listings in the database of the WordPress site you run. Directify's pricing page says nothing about full exports, so ask before you commit.
Avoid a hosted tier if you must control the code. The Brilliant Directories terms bar hosting its platform assets elsewhere, while eDirectory's source license is designed for self-hosting. Avoid a license or plugin route if you do not want to manage hosting, updates and security yourself.
Next step: run the same test on two builders
Pick two builders from the shortlist and build the same ten listings and one paid plan in each. Brilliant Directories offers a seven-day trial and a free demo, eDirectory a free demo, Directify a free plan, Join It a free trial and GeoDirectory a free core plugin. Then follow how to build a directory website to take the winner live.
