GeoDirectory, Directorist and Business Directory Plugin are free WordPress plugins that need your own hosting. Brilliant Directories has no free plan; it offers a 7-day free trial with no credit card and a free demo.

The one hosted free plan: Directify

Directify's Free plan costs $0 for 1 directory and 10 listings. Directify says the site stays live on its subdomain with no time limit, and the plan does not include a custom domain.

Directify's Starter plan, at $12 a month billed monthly, raises the cap to 50 listings, adds a custom domain and removes branding. Accepting payments is listed from Pro, at $39 a month billed monthly. Directify's home page says no card is required for the Free plan, while every paid plan starts with a 7-day trial that asks for one. Directify alternatives sets five other builders against it.

Free WordPress plugins and the hosting they still need

GeoDirectory's home page says to install the free plugin, set your location and start listing. Directorist's core plugin is free, and its listing CSV import and export are free. Business Directory Plugin's free version has no listing limit and no trial period.

Each plugin needs WordPress hosting, and none of the plugin pages prices it. Charging listing owners costs extra: GeoDirectory needs the Pricing Manager add-on, Directorist lists paid listings among its premium extensions, and the free Business Directory Plugin adds an extra fee on Stripe payments, on top of Stripe's own fees. Free trials instead of free plans

A trial runs for a fixed period, while the Directify Free plan has no time limit. Brilliant Directories offers two entry routes: a 7-day free trial with no credit card, started from its trial page, and a free demo, started from a form on its plans page.

WildApricot's page lists a 60-day free trial with no credit card and says the account is deleted if you have not upgraded afterward. Join It says every plan includes a free trial with no credit card. When to move from free to paid

Move up on Directify when you pass 10 listings or want a custom domain (Starter, $12 a month billed monthly) or payments (Pro, $39 a month billed monthly).

On GeoDirectory the paid step is the Pricing Manager add-on at $49 a year for one site. On Directorist the list price is $129 a year for one site. On Business Directory Plugin, Basic is $99 for the first year and renews at $149 a year. On Brilliant Directories, Essentials is $40 a month, billed monthly.
