Pick the area, the businesses and the categories
To build a business directory website, choose the area and the kinds of business it lists, add real businesses, let their owners claim and upgrade their listings, then set paid and featured plans and connect a payment gateway. In Brilliant Directories, categories run to top, sub and sub-sub levels, and its themes page names business directory and city guide families.

Try Brilliant Directories →Fill it with real businesses
Instant Business Data is the Brilliant Directories tool that adds real businesses by category and place. One credit is one listing. Run it from the admin dashboard:
- Search by business category and location.
- Set preferred attributes such as email, phone or website, and skip company names already on the site. Skipped duplicates use no credits.
- Assign a membership plan, a member status, a tag and a category.
- Import 10 records first, before a larger batch.
The vendor's pages disagree on included records. The account page lists 500, 2,500 and 5,000 Instant Business listings by tier, the plans page lists 100 records for its monthly plan and 1,000 for its lifetime plan, and its setup wizard page says every new site starts with at least 500 free listings, so ask how many records your plan includes.
Email addresses and logo images are not guaranteed, and the vendor says the data is not intended for bulk email campaigns or prospecting. Its help article says to remove a listing when the business asks.
Google Search Central's spam policies, read October 23, 2026, list scraping feeds or search results to generate many pages as an example of scaled content abuse. Imported listings carry no promise of ranking, so give each entry something the raw record lacks.
Let owners claim and upgrade their listings
The vendor says a claimable listing turns an imported business into a paying member. The Claimable Business Listings add-on, which its add-on page marks as included on Essentials, Builder and Pro, the three tiers on its account pricing page, works in this order:
- Create a membership plan of the Claim type.
- Import the businesses into that plan; the file needs no email address.
- The owner clicks Claim Listing on the profile.
- The system sends the owner to the pricing page to choose a membership level.
No ready-made invitation email exists, so you write your own. On WordPress, GeoDirectory combines its Claim Listings and Pricing Manager extensions for pay-to-claim.
Set listing prices and connect payments
A Brilliant Directories membership plan can bill monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or yearly, and its home page says members can be charged per listing. The plans page lists featured listing upsells. Add a gateway under Finance, then Payment Settings: money from it goes straight to the account behind it, and the vendor says to test with a sign-up as a new member.
The vendor words its platform fee as $0, and your payment processor's fees still apply: Stripe's pricing page lists 2.9% plus 30 cents per successful domestic card transaction. How to make money from a directory website covers featured placements and leads.
Launch and keep listings current
A new site begins on a free directoryup.com address, and you connect your own domain when the directory is ready. Changing nameservers or mail records can interrupt existing email, so check where email is hosted first.
Instant Business Data from Brilliant Directories fills a new directory with real businesses from 3,500+ categories, per its headline, and Essentials, $40 a month billed monthly on its account pricing page as read on October 23, 2026, lists 500 Instant Business listings; best directory website builder for small business compares it with other builders.
A new owner can start with the Brilliant Directories 7-day free trial from its trial page, which needs no credit card. Brilliant Directories pricing covers the rest of the bill.
