How to build a directory website with WordPress and a directory plugin

Last reviewed October 23, 2026

Quick answerTo build a directory on WordPress you need hosting, a directory plugin or theme, a paid listings add-on and a payment gateway, then categories and listings. GeoDirectory's paid listings add-on is $49 a year for one site.

What a WordPress directory needs: hosting, plugin and payments

To build a directory website with WordPress, you install WordPress on hosting you buy, add a directory plugin or theme, add a paid-listings extension and a payment gateway, then create categories and listings. WordPress.org recommends a host with PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL, and HTTPS.

No plugin or theme page names a hosting price, so add that cost yourself. A hosted builder such as Brilliant Directories skips this stack, as the last section explains.

Pick a directory plugin or theme

Four plugins and one theme cover the usual routes, priced in US dollars as read on October 23, 2026. Listeo's figure comes from its page data, because its page shows each visitor's own currency. Best directory website builder for WordPress compares them by license, and GeoDirectory vs Directorist sets two of them side by side.

Add paid listings and take payments

  • GeoDirectory: Pricing Manager makes packages with a price and a duration, and needs a cart. GetPaid comes with PayPal, bank transfer and a few other gateways. WooCommerce does not support recurring payments without its paid Subscriptions plugin.
  • Directorist: charging for featured listings needs no extension, and the default gateway is bank transfer, so you update each order's status by hand. Its payment articles show 2021 update dates, so a step may differ in the current plugin.
  • Business Directory Plugin: the free plugin takes Stripe payments with an extra fee on each transaction on top of Stripe's own fees, and its plugin page says upgrading removes it.

Test the whole paid flow with a normal user account before launch, as GeoDirectory's documentation advises.

Import listings and set up categories

Create categories first. GeoDirectory does not show a listing that has no category and nests child categories under parents, and Directorist needs a category to exist before a listing is assigned to it.

Then import by CSV. Directorist's CSV tool is free, and its documentation suggests starting with about 500 records. Business Directory Plugin lists CSV import and export on all three paid plans, Listeo imports CSV or XML, and Directories Pro imports and exports CSV. For GeoDirectory, leave the ID column blank on new listings and do not edit CSV files in Excel.

Keep it updated: licenses, renewals and backups

GeoDirectory and Directorist keep working after a license lapses, but without updates or support. Business Directory Plugin asks for renewal to keep support, plugin updates and new add-ons. On your own WordPress site you own your listings and data, so updates and backups are yours to run.

When a hosted builder is less work

Brilliant Directories is the route that skips WordPress, with hosting and SSL included per its account pricing page FAQ, payments going straight into your own gateway account and Essentials, the entry tier on its account pricing page, at $40 a month, billed monthly, which Brilliant Directories vs WordPress compares in full. If you would rather not run WordPress, the Brilliant Directories 7-day free trial needs no credit card.

Stay on WordPress if you already run a WordPress site and want to own the data and choose your plugins. Move to a hosted builder if updates, hosting and a gateway stack are the work you want to avoid.
