Brilliant Directories vs WordPress with a directory plugin

Brilliant Directories vs WordPress: the main difference

Brilliant Directories is a hosted service and WordPress is software you host yourself, so the working comparison is Brilliant Directories against WordPress with a directory plugin: GeoDirectory, Directorist or Business Directory Plugin. Essentials, the entry tier, is $40 a month, billed monthly, on the account pricing page, as read on October 23, 2026, and its FAQ says hosting, SSL and automatic backups come with it.

What each route costs, by billing basis

Compare monthly with monthly and yearly with yearly. Essentials is $40 a month billed monthly, or $20 a month billed yearly ($240 a year). The yearly figure may change, and a discounted yearly plan may fall outside the terms' seven-day money-back guarantee, which covers new, full-price subscription plans only. The WordPress licenses below are yearly, except Directorist's lifetime option.

• GeoDirectory: Pricing Manager, the paid-listings add-on, is $49 a year for one site, $69 for two to five sites or $99 for unlimited sites. A membership with every add-on is $139 a year for one website or $229 for unlimited websites.
• Directorist: $129 a year for one site (Starter), $169 for five sites (Pro) or $219 for unlimited sites (Agency), all at list price, or $379 lifetime for one site. Its pricing page was running a promotion on October 23, 2026.
• Business Directory Plugin: Basic is $99 for the first year, then $149 a year at renewal, for one site.

No vendor page prices WordPress hosting, which comes on top of each license.

Paid listings and payments on each route

• Brilliant Directories: its plans and monetize pages list recurring plans billed monthly, annually or per tier, featured-listing upsells, and gateways such as Stripe, PayPal and Authorize.net, paid into your own gateway account. The vendor words its fee as $0 platform fees; your payment processor's fees still apply.
• GeoDirectory: paid listings need Pricing Manager plus GetPaid, or WooCommerce with its paid Subscriptions plugin for recurring payments.
• Directorist: pricing plans and paid listings are premium extensions, and every membership includes all of them.
• Business Directory Plugin: the free plugin takes Stripe payments with an extra fee on each transaction on top of Stripe's own fees, and its plugin page says upgrading removes it. Stripe and discount codes are listed from Pro.

Who controls the code and the data

On Brilliant Directories the code stays on the vendor's servers (the terms are covered in Brilliant Directories vs eDirectory), while you keep ownership of the content you upload. On WordPress you own the listings, members and data: Business Directory Plugin's page says so, and GeoDirectory uses its own database tables on your site.

GeoDirectory and Directorist keep working without support or updates after a license ends. Business Directory Plugin needs a renewal for support, updates and new add-ons.

Who should pick which

Pick Brilliant Directories to skip hosting, plugins and updates. It has a 7-day free trial with no credit card, started from its trial page. The plugins list refund windows instead: GeoDirectory 30 days, on a first purchase only and not on lifetime deals, and Directorist and Business Directory Plugin 14 days.

Pick WordPress with a plugin if you already run WordPress hosting and want the data on it. The steps are in how to build a directory website with WordPress, the shortlist is the best directory website builder for WordPress, and two of the plugins go head to head in GeoDirectory vs Directorist.
