How to build a directory website with AI: setup, listings and Google's rules

Last reviewed October 23, 2026

Quick answerAI can set up a directory's look and draft listing descriptions, but each listing still needs real business data and added value to stay clear of Google's scaled content policy. Brilliant Directories offers both.

What AI can do when you build a directory

To build a directory website with AI, use an AI setup wizard to draft the logo, colors and homepage, use AI to write a description for each listing from real business data, and review everything by hand before it goes live. Brilliant Directories documents four AI tools: the Setup Wizard, written descriptions in Instant Business Data, an assistant called BD Butler and a ChatGPT add-on.

Others say they do part of the work. Directify says its AI builds a whole directory from a description, eDirectory lists an AI setup assistant above its plan cards, and Directorist's plugin page describes a Create with AI option.

AI setup: logo, colors and homepage

The vendor's AI Setup Wizard page lists three steps, and its help article details the second:

  1. Describe the site by answering a few questions.
  2. AI builds a starter site: a logo from your answers, colors from a palette and a homepage with a stock photo matched to the name and industry.
  3. Make it yours. Everything the wizard sets up stays customizable.

The wizard page says this takes 60 seconds, while the help article says a minute or two. The wizard page invites you to try it in a free demo. Brilliant Directories also has a 7-day free trial with no credit card, and no page says whether the wizard is part of that trial.

AI-written listings from real business data

Instant Business Data adds real businesses by category and place, one credit for each listing. The vendor says every listing gets a unique AI-written description. The help article attributes name, address, website, description, logo and map location to each business's public Google Maps listing, while the product page says public and commercial sources.

Email addresses and logo images are not guaranteed in imports, and the vendor says the data is not intended for bulk email campaigns or prospecting.

AI credits and what they cover

The account pricing page gives Essentials, Builder and Pro 25, 50 and 150 AI credits a month, while its AI credits page says every website includes 30 a month, so do not size a content plan on either figure alone.

BD Butler is an AI assistant inside the admin area, in six places including the page builder, email templates and newsletters. One credit is one AI interaction. Monthly plan credits reset on the first of each month and do not roll over, and purchased credits do not expire. The account pricing page sells +10 AI credits for $1 a month.

The ChatGPT Content Creator add-on needs your own ChatGPT account and API key, and the AI provider bills you for usage. Warning: through the MCP server, an outside assistant can read and update your members, pages, categories and leads, and writes, deletes included, happen on your live site immediately, with no undo. The vendor says you set the permissions and can take them back.

Google's rules on scaled and scraped pages

Google Search Central's spam policies, read October 23, 2026, define scaled content abuse as many pages generated mainly to manipulate search rankings and not to help users, and name scraping feeds or search results to generate many pages as an example.

Its guidance on generative AI says many pages generated without adding value for users may violate that policy, that outputs can contain inaccuracies, and that manually fact-checking and reviewing AI-generated content before publishing is critical. Imported, AI-described listings carry no promise of ranking.

Brilliant Directories says its AI setup wizard makes a logo, colors and a homepage in about 60 seconds and its Instant Business Data writes a unique description for each imported listing; Brilliant Directories review weighs both against its plans and terms. No code directory website builder covers the wider field.
