Make money from a directory website: paid and featured listings

A directory website makes money by charging listing owners for paid or featured listings, selling leads, running banner ads and sponsorships, or charging members for gated content. A payment processor's fee comes out of each payment.

Start with one model and add others later. Split listings into a free basic listing that fills the directory and a paid listing that sits higher in results or shows more detail. The listing owner pays for that difference, so make it easy to see. A member plan, a lead or an ad slot works the same way: decide what the payer gets that a free visitor does not.

The builders below set this up as plans or packages. In Brilliant Directories a membership plan is Free, Paid or Claim, and a plan setting ranks its members in search results, so a Free plan and a Paid plan ranked above it give free basic and paid featured listings. The Claim type lets a business pay to take over an imported listing. A help article says it appears once the claim listing add-on or the VIP Add-Ons Club is active, and the add-on page lists Claimable Business Listings as included on Essentials, Builder and Pro. In GeoDirectory a package has a price and a lifetime, meaning how long the listing stays live, and can recur or include a trial. In Business Directory Plugin, featured listings are set in the plan and sort to the start of results.

Member plans and gated content

A member plan charges for access instead of placement. Brilliant Directories lets a plan paywall pages, posts and sections, bill monthly, quarterly, every six months, yearly or every 24 months, and add a one-time setup fee or sell a one-time payment only. Directify lists gated access among the ways to charge, and Directorist's Pricing Plans extension offers pay-per-listing and package plans with duration and recurring payment options.

Leads, banner ads and sponsorships

Brilliant Directories lets the owner sell leads per lead, in credit packs or bundled into plans. Leads sent through the site's Get Matched form wait as Pending for the admin to review and match by hand, unless the automatic lead matching add-on is on. Banner ads run as rotating widgets in sidebars, headers, footers and homepage sections once banner ads are enabled, and the monetize page adds dashboard sponsorships. The Pay Per Post add-on charges members a set price each time they publish.

Fees that come out of each payment

Setting prices for listings and plans

Work out a floor price from your own numbers. Add up the monthly cost of running the directory, such as the builder plan and any blocks or add-ons, divide it by the number of paid listings you expect to sell, then add the processor's fee on each payment. Price the paid tier above that floor, and compare it with what other directories in your niche charge. Each builder here sets the price per plan. Brilliant Directories lets a plan offer upgrade and downgrade paths, set how many categories a member can be listed in and give different sign-up forms to different plans. Coupon codes, free trials for your own members and members-only content are not included on Essentials. Member trials can require a card or not, and members who do not cancel are charged when the trial ends.
